Gas detector calibration policy

A gas detector you cannot trust is worse than no detector at all. This page explains what we do to every monitor before it leaves the shop, and what you must do every day it is on rent.

What we do before every rental

Every gas detector ships bump-tested and calibrated, with a certificate in the case. Before a monitor goes out we:

  • Run a full calibration against certified calibration gas, or verify the unit is within its current calibration interval.
  • Bump test the unit and confirm every sensor alarms.
  • Include the test certificate showing the unit, the date and the results, keep it with your entry records.
  • Charge the battery and check alarms, display and pump where fitted.

What you must do during the rental

You must bump test the detector daily, before each day's use, per the manufacturer's guidance. A detector that fails a bump test must not be used for entry. Do not attempt to recalibrate a rental unit yourself, call us and we will exchange it. Bump test kits and calibration gas are available as rental add-ons in Gas Detection.

Bump test vs calibration, what's the difference

Daily, your job Bump test (function check)
A quick pass/fail check. You expose the sensors to a known concentration of test gas, enough to trigger the alarms, and confirm the unit responds. It proves the sensors and alarms work today. It does not adjust anything. This is the daily check.
Scheduled, our job Calibration
A full adjustment. The instrument's readings are set against a certified concentration of calibration gas so the displayed values are accurate, not just the alarms functional. Calibration happens on a schedule set by the manufacturer, and after any failed bump test. On rental units, calibration is our job.

Short version: calibration makes the numbers right, a bump test proves the unit still reacts. Both matter, and the daily bump test is yours.

If a unit fails in the field

Stop using it and contact us. We will swap the unit as fast as scheduling allows. Late-return charges never apply to time lost to a unit we exchanged for a fault.

This policy is part of our rental terms. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the specific model on your rental, they govern where anything here is more general.
